How do you console someone who is grieving?

I am clueless when it comes to consoling a friend who lost a loved one, it is not because I don’t care neither is it because I have no emotions but genuinely at that moment I do not know what to say to make the person feel better. I have a friend who lost her mum recently and up till now I have not been able to call or text her, I find myself practicing what I’d say to her but as soon as I pick up the phone I go blank. Yesterday, I passed by her shop and when I tried calling out her name no words came out. I told the cab guy to keep moving and I just started crying, does this make me a bad friend?

I’d really love to know if there are other ways I can show how sorry I am, you might say I should text but I have tried that and I end up deleting the message without sending it. I am open to suggestions, anything at all. How do I let my friend know I care and I am sorry for her loss?
